I am living with my partner who is in full time work, we have 2 children, the youngest is 4 months old and currently we recieve £7.32 working tax credit and £105 child tax credit. I am not working, nor recieving any sort of maternity pay so I was wondering if i would be entitled to job seekers allowence as i am looking for a part time job. Also, if i was to get a part time job would i lose my tax credits or would they be topped up? I am asking on here because i have no clue and trying to get help from the job centres or citizens advice is like pulling teeth! is it any wonder there's so much unemployment in the country when you can't even get advice from your local job centre unless you're already on benefits!!!! Any help would be greatly recieved.

I assume you are not entitled to contribution based job seekers allowance (JSA) - i.e. allowance based on your previous payment of NI contributions over a period (the rules are a bit complex but you won't be entitled if you haven't been paying much or any NI in the last 2 or 3 years). The other version of JSA is means tested & if your partner earns more than about £105 per week you won't have any entitlement.

I assume you have notified the tax credit people of the birth of your youngest & that the figures you quote include CTC for him/her. If you work, the total income for the family will increase & the tax credits will reduce. You will be better off than now because they do not reduce by the full amount of your income (I believe the reduction is 39% of your gross pay but you may also have NI & income tax deducted from your gross).
