I have a banister rail that seems to be coated in a waxy type 'stuff'Weather this is grease from use or deliberate,it is ugly and uneven,so I crudely began to clean it,using plastic wool,Mr Muscle and washing soda.Although this seemed to loosed it,scraping was quite effective in the nooks and crannies.Any tips on what I should be doing? Thanks for any help

White spirit
Probably those soap filled wire wool pads would help??? Brillo pads, that's the name!!
