Can one imagine Brown's lot giving us a referendum over such a matter?

No he would hand the cash over without even being asked.

Did we have a referendum to see if we should have paid the US what we owed them for WW2?

AOG, you love referendums. Looking at, say, the last 12 months of parliament, how many referedums would you have wanted and on which issues?
Question Author
Every issue this "waste of space" government of ours, have made a decision on.
Like most of the UK media, the Daily Mail has misrepresented this story. Icelanders were not asked to vote on whether to pay what they are responsible for under EU bank guarantee legislation - they have consistently said they will pay this. What was voted on was whether the deal negotiated last year between Icelandic and British/Dutch teams should be ratified as law - they rejected the deal. This is about the terms of payment, not whether to pay, although it is academic now because negotiators are already working on a replacement agreement. So, instead, voters have turned it into a statement on the treatment of Iceland, particularly by Britain. The British and Dutch, seeing the writing on the wall, decided quickly to offer less onerous terms so discussions have again been under way for several weeks.
We have had only one referendum in the last 40 years in this country.

Do you stand by that result AOG?
