Can't get it online this morning. The Spectator has posted the chess column as the crossword in error. Have e-mailed Doc. I will check again later. I know that we are all desperate.

Congratulations Novalis and Copelander. I thought this week's puzzle was an enjoyable romp, very European in flavour, if somewhat dated in places.
Belated congratulations to Novalis and Copelander - well deserved both!
Thank you Kayakamina, Christiana and Slaney for your kind words.
Could someone confirm 31 DOWN for me a.s.a.p - I have WALLOP, but not clear on the word play.
Hi crucifernz, the answer is callop (reversed pollack without the "k")
Perhaps you can help me with 2d, one of the "dates". It has to be December and I have googled so many languages but, so far, I cannot find this one : ?HAG?Y?
It's OK ; I've finally found it (even had the page up several times !) It's the Welsh Rhagfyr
Thanks for your correction Ulysses100. The Welsh was fun - rather more obscure than the others.
