I turned over on my ankle on Wednesday. Whilst being extremely painful I know that it is not broken. There was a great deal of swelling around the anklebone which has now subsided except for a lump directly below the bone. It is painful to touch but Iam able to walk albeit with a slight gait. How long until the lump goes away? Should I see my G.P?

Seeing your GP is always a good idea. It's probably just a sprain but at least if you see your GP he/she will give you painkillers and anti-inflamatories
dizmou is correct.......how do you know it isn't broken?

Swelling is almost certainly a haematoma (blood clot).......nothing to do with DVT........which will disappear within 10days.

Thank you dizmouk2009 and sqad for your advice. I have broken my ankle before and this feels different. I did not wish to bother my GP however, in retrospect, I shall take your advice. I am taking Brufen and paracetomol at the moment. Should I put a strapping on my ankle?
I really don't think that strapping, three days later would serve any purpose.

Okay. Thank you Sqad.

One final thing Sqad if you are still around, would I be able to fly (long haul) if my ankle is broken?
Charisse....depends upon which part of it is broken and what the treatment might be.

If in Plaster of Paris, I would not advice it and certainly not if surgical intervention was required.

Oh.Well I had better find out if it is broken. Thank you.
Ive done this on many occasions with both ankles as they are very weak, this last time i did which was Aug bank holiday weekend last year and it was a bad one, i went to a & e had x-rays which showed i had badly torn my tissue and ligaments, they straped it which i had to keep on for 4 days, gave me pills for the pain, im still to this day having problems with swelling and pain 5 months on, im under the hospital for excersize treatment to try to strenghthen the ankle up which i have to do weekly. Hope this helps.

tamirra thank you for your answer. I am worried now however I shall see my GP on Monday. I have broken the same ankle before. I do have a high pain threshold and whilst it is painful it is not excrutiatingly so (like the last time). I had considered going to hospital however it would be quite difficult today and I know how busy they are. I do not feel that mine is an emergency. I shall however look at the NHS website and may call them for advice. Thank you all again, Good Afternoon.
