Does anyone have experience of this or suggest the best way to do this please?
I thought maybe using an oil-stone or emery paper, though this would take some time. Would an electric grindstone be too rough and perhaps cause more damage than there is already?

chuck it in the recycling is my suggestion guernseyman, asdas are selling all sorts of glasses at 50p each and they look ok, not bought any mind.
To smooth glass properly you will need some form of diamond lapping device. Hand ones are available but they are not cheap. Unless this is a very special glass best get rid of it.
