New compiler (Scorpion) to me and I can't get into this crossword. Only managed 13 clues so far since last night.

Would the answer to 1a help?

There isn't a 1A, only 7A or 1D and I haven't got either of those yet! I've done top right and bottom left corners so far. I'm just trying to get into the setter's way of thinking. Quixote, Phi etc are (relatively) easy, but I'm not one of those people who can finish a puzzle in 15 minutes. It's years since I failed to complete an Independent puzzle eventually, though.
Impossible to help without you giving the clues.
Sorry. I meant 7a AIREDALE.

1D Grisham novel alienates male Anglican. Archbishop? (3, 5) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ E

7A Dog untied lead chasing whiff by collie's rear (8)
1d HIS GRACE

Thanks zita-green. Now I've seen it I can figure out why. Anagram of lead with air and e (of collie)
You're welcome.
Question Author
OK, figured that one out as well. I thought it was an anagram because of the term "novel" but hadn't worked it out. Thanks again

Finished it! Thanks again zita-green
Well done. I did not find it easy. I'm not going to do the Sat Indy any more because I can't get inside scorpion's head. I do the Guardian prize and the Spectator (with help) and find the Sindy more consistent and enjoyable. It offers better prizes, too.
