Over the next week or so I want to scan my family photos for posterity. I am wondering what would be the best DPI setting for general photos. I dont want to go overboard with really high dpi settings....and advice ?????

If it really is for posterity then do it at the highest DPI you can. But where are you going to store these photo's? Remember the BBC's digital Domesday Book project of the 1980's. Unreadable today - they used leading edge laser disc technology. CDs, discs, tape, none of them last that long -you'll have to regularly recopy them to new media. Will your descendants have the technology to read them?

I thought I was aware of the speed of change but after reading your post above I checked out Domesday on Google and was amazed to see it was only 15 years ago. Hmmm I am going to go ahead with it anyway for space saving and will keep an eye on fomat changes. Thanks
