Swede cubes for mashing - how boring.........

Got some of these to have mashed up as an accompaniement with some fish tonight although I wanted to somehow spruce the swede up a little. How would you go about this - any tasty suggestions?

Why ruin it by mashing. Boil for about 7 - 8 minutes and serve with butter and black pepper.

Quite like mashed swede, but trying to think of a way to make a really tasty, I find it can be quite bland......
Well if you must....

How about:



* 500g/1lb 2oz yellow turnips (swede), trimmed and peeled
* 2 tbsp butter
* 1 tsp freshly grated, peeled ginger or pinch ground ginger
* salt and freshly ground white pepper
* handful of fresh chives, chopped, to serve



1. Place the swede into a large saucepan and cover with water
2. Bring to the boil and cook until tender
3. Drain the swede and put back in the pan
4. Put over a very low heat for a few minutes, stirring, to remove any water left
5. Add the butter and ginger to the pan and stir well
6. Cook gently for a few minutes, then mash with a potato masher until smooth
7. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground white pepper
8. To serve, place onto serving dish and sprinkle with the chives

You can also mash with sage and butter cook in the usual way then:

Melt an amount of butter and, once it has begun to froth, throw in the sage leaves and allow to crisp in the fat until they have darkened slightly and are giving off every last vestige of their scent. Spoon over the mashed swede and serve up promptly.
I usually just mash mine up with butter and pepper. Lovely!

As a kid, the one mixture guaranteed to get me to be sick, much to my mum's irritation. Still makes me heave today ..mmmmmm ... years later! Why, I have no idea - I love both vegetables in chunks with butter and black pepper, even on the same plate...........
lightly sweetened with honey, add butter & b.pepper and freshly chopped coriander.
i mash mine with sweet potato and black pepper, even the kids eat it
