Kids want a Goldfish

We went to the fair the other night and the kids wanted to 'win' a fish. I said no as they didn't look very healthy but promised them I would buy them one from a pet shop. I have been given a rectangular tank with a filter and water cleaner stuff but now have no idea what to do. Obviously I need to set all the tank up first, but do I need to leave it to settle before I put fish in it? I am a complete novice so any advice is much appreciated. Thanks x x

Set the tank up as good as you can and leave it for at least two days. Then take a small jar of water to a small petshop (in the larger ones you're likely to find well intentioned but uninformed staff) or even better, a specialised fish shop and if their aquariums look clean and healthy, tell them what you've done and ask them to test the water. Any worthwhile fish fancier will give good advice to a possible budding fish enthusiast(s).
