Stop Automatic Numbering in Word

I would be grateful if someone could tell me how to stop automatic numbering when typing a document. I keep changing it to none in page layout but it then just carries on with the automatic numbering. Is there a way I can stop this permanently as it is driving me mad!

Do you mean automatic numbering in bullets if so go FORMAT then AUTOFORMAT then select options and untick Automatic bullets lists
