One of the best books I've read over the last 5 years or so.
It's definitely worth a read and I would recommend it to anyone - especially women.
yes, i've read it too, when it was on the richard and judy list a couple of years ago. it's really good, needs concentration as it skips around a lot, but is well worth the effort. am looking forward to seeing the film.
Loved the book (once you got over the concept!), but I think the film will be rubbish. Films of books normally are. I wish it had ended a bit differently/better as well, though I'm not sure exactly how.
maybe the film will be rubbish, and sometimes when you've really enjoyed a book and then are disappointed with the film, it diminishes the book too. however, sometimes the film helps explain things eg. the da vinci code. i found the book quite boring and didn't manage to get half way through it, but really enjoyed the film.
i really enjoyed the tv series of the ladies detective agency too, it completely lived up to the books, it was how i'd pictured it all in my head - the colours, personalities, places.
I've read it twice and loved it both times but it makes me too sad so I'm reluctant to ever read it again! I thought it was so unusual and one of those books where you really care about the characters. Are you thinking of reading it or already read it?
Sddsddean- I tried for ages to think of a different way for it to end after I read it the first time but I don't think there would be any way of doing it without contradicitng the concept of the book.
I couldn't get into it unfortunately but my daughter loved it.
I too loved this book and I really hope that the film can capture its essence. Hopefully the director will have read Atonement and then watched the film to see that being faithfull to a book can make a terrific film!

An interesting concept but the book was overlong with too much "padding" of incidents which were not necessary to advance the story in any meaningful way. Perhaps a film would be successful because, by necessity, it would have to pick out essential elements of the story.
Question Author
Hi everyone, thanks so much for your comments. in answer to your question Sophie, I just finished it, read it in a record 3 days! I just couldnt stop and yesterday I just felt so bereft now that if was finished. I totally fell in love with the characters.

I think you might be right dean, not sure how the film is going to reproduce the structure of the book, all that time travelling.

Is anyone tempted to read her next book ????
I think it is my favourite book. I recommend it to lots of people and must have read it 6 times myself. I buy copies and thrust them on to friends. The new book looks and sounds good ( listen to a bit on Amazon.uk). Not so impressed with her picture novels.
Just come in from seeing film and it was GOOD. Not as black as the book but still made me cry. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoyed the book and I heard a lot of people who had not read the book saying they thought it was very good.
