I may remove a tree because of its age and I thought I might leave a metre ( 3/4 feet) of the trunk standing and put something useful/decorative on top. The trunk is about 30cm ( one foot ) across. Any suggestions would be welcome . It is in the middle of the front garden so it can't be anything of value that could be stolen.

yes, i'd put a bird table or birdbath on it. you'll be amazed how many birds you'll attract depending on what sort of food you put out too - useful and decorative!

Good ideas but we have so many cats around here that many people have stopped feeding birds to save their lives.
Sit a hanging basket on top, securing it to the top of the trunk with screws to prevent theft. Other containers could be used as well.

In summer plant with usual plants. For winter try ivies, pansies, polyanthus and a few bulbs, mini ones if necessary such as tete a tete narcissi and grape hyacinth.
