As The One Show has just said ...

"A social experiment that didn't work"

"Awfully vulgar"

And Debrett's does say (as best I can recall) that one should NEVER use fish knives.

So, come on ...

Who will DARE to admit to using them ??????

Or, put another way ...

Who is daft enough to hold themselves up for the inevitable ridicule that will follow ?

According to this -

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-120090 6/Knife-sales-plummet-diners-choose-eat-just-f ork.html

- people are not using any kind of knife any more.
Not that I am ever invited to such things, but I think you will find that at formal dinners, where they have a fish course - as opposed to simply having fish - the place settings would include a fish knife.

At mid formal, yes ... or ... "pretentious"

If a member of The Royal Family invited you to lunch, there wouldn't be any fish knives.
You've had lunch with the Royal Family?? Tugs forelock...
Someone gave me 6 fish knives as a wedding present , but no forks can you believe.!!!!!
Even Oxfam laughed when I handed them in.

yAAYYY, WE'VE GOT A DEBATE GOING

(oops, sorry)

=0)

So, where were we? Oh yes, The Royal Family ...

Well, I've eaten in the same restaurant as Zoe Ball and Norman.

Who are ... Brighton Royalty.

Does that count ?
Question Author
Brenda ... well done for handing them in.

Was this during the recent

Fish Knife Amnesty

organised by the Good Taste Police ???

LOL
My husband met the Queen - she told him he was very clever.

I've actually got a set of fish knives that have been lovingly passed down from my great grandparents. Judging from their immaculate condition, they have nnver been used; and no; we didn't get any forks with them either!
Well there are those of us of a certain age (and I'm not suggesting that Brenda falls into that category) who as a matter of course have during our life come by a set of fish knives - and forks - though God knows where they are now. Even if I knew where they were I would never use them unless I were formally entertaining - and then I probably would without realising that that would make me a social pariah - hangs head in shame...
We always had fish on fridays at primary school and I'm sure we used fish knives, that was in the sixties...I definately used them on holiday in sea-side hotels, again in the sixties.

I was also given brown windsor and mock-turtle soups at those same hotels - what the heck was mock-turtle???

fish knives are not for cutting, who needs to cut fish, it is so tender, the knife should be used to lift the fish away from the bones, especially when you have a whole fish on your plate, you lift the flesh of the bones one side then turn it over to do the same the other side, or can be used to remove the skin and is ideally shaped for the job, saves all that untidy picking, i was shown how to do this at an early age, by a mum who thought eating fish and chips with the fingers disgusting (its the only way i eat them now, they taste better that way ).
do you need fish fingers to use a fish knife?
Mock Turtle Soup - This was a consomme with a calf's head, maybe a calf's foot, and root vegetables like turnips, swede and carrots. That's why in the Alice in Wonderland illustrations the Mock Turtle has a calf's head and feet.
So why are fish forks a strange shape too?
