A compressor has a compressor to pressurise the coolant, a 12v electric (usually fitted in caravans) has a heating element to do the same job works on the same principle as a gas fridge.

A 12 volt compressor fridge has a 12 volt three phase AC motor. It is driven by a special inverter that converts the DC power to what is required by the motor.
