what is the liability to the witness on a guarantee and indemnity contract where one of the guarantors' signatures has been found to be fraudulent? this was signed in good faith and there was no reason to believe it would have been anything other thatn genuine.

I cannot see that there is any liability - you probably need to be more specific. If the Witness is under the impression that Joe Bloggs is signing the document and he is witnessing that signature I cannot see how he might be liable if he is a lay person. However, if he KNOWS that the person signing is NOT Joe Bloggs, it could amount to a criminal charge of conspiracy.
