I've asked this before with no luck, but it still bothers me from time to time so I'll try again...!

Does anyone know the name of a children's book set - I think - in the last war, or possibly the First World War, about a boy in a village - possibly Italian - which had been occupied by the Germans (again, I think).  A travelling show comes to the village featuring all the characters of the Commedia dell'Arte - Puncinello, Columbine, Harlequin.  In some magical or mystical way which eludes me, the people in the show collaborate with the boy and the villagers to drive out the Germans.  Various plot points may be incorrect after all this time!  I think I read this in the late 70s, and I'd love to know what it's called if it rings any bells with anyone.
