Apart from acting as a bird food supplement do slugs have any use in nature. ?

They're also food for hedgehogs, toads, frogs, beetles and slow worms.

most if not all of them eat rotting vegetation so are part of the natural composting program

Thank you, I wont feel quite so bad now when they destroy my seedlings.

Just drown the pesky things in a jar of bitter ale, and save your veg.
