Sell-by dates on fresh produce could be a thing of the past as part of a new "war on waste", according to Hilary Benn, the Environment minister.

He warned that best-before dates are intended to be a mark of quality but are often mistaken for a safety warning. Sell-by dates are used by retailers for stock control - but can end up confusing customers into throwing away perfectly good food.

Marks & Spencers sell their going out of date stuff to their staff.

The staff will go for 'waste' after the store has closed. A friend of mine got 3 bag fulls on sunday for 8.
Yes we can buy the best before date stuff on the day, as can customers at a reduced price.

I was talking about food after that date, say the day after. We have to throw it away and the vast majority of it is still fresh. We aren't allowed to take it, I've even offered to pay for it as say 10p, but again- was refused :-(
We were at one time allowed to buy food which was just going out of date,or out of date on that particular day and maybe pay 10 or 20p but then we got a new manager and that was stopped ----in case 'someone bought something going out of date, then went home ate something totally different, ended up with a stomach upset and then bla med the going out of date product'
