To check basic specification of your computer click on Start, then right click on My Computer and select Properties, then select General. That should tell you information about the processor, hard drive and operating system. If you want to find every bit of information about what is installed then select Hardware (instead of General) and Device Manager instead but you will then have to click on each item to see what's what.
On XP there is a System Information option which tells you all that (no need to go into Device Manager as pamoates says).

On XP I select Accessories, then System Tools then Sysytem Information (that route may vary depending how you have your menus set up).

Vista has a similar option but cannot remember the name and I dont have Vista to hand.
Let's simplify it even further. Google "Belarc Advisor", download the program, install it and run it.

It will tell you all you need to know plus considerably more than the two suggestions above
