ebay - postage charges

I was looking at the bags on ebay and saw a rather nice bag that started at 99p. The postage was 25.00!!

Thinking this was an error I contacted the seller the query it but was told that it was correct!!

They stated that this meant that if you won the item it would cost you 25.99.

I understand that you might want a minimum price for your item (I always start my listings at the minimum price I will accept) but surely this is the wrong way to do this?

What do others think?

I dont use ebay, but could this be a way to avoid ebay charges?

I assume you only pay the ebay charges on the 99p not the whole cost.

So make the item very cheap, and the postage huge.

That is a very good thought.

You are correct that you would only pay ebay charges on the 99p, although paypal charge on the whole amount.
there are no e bay fees on postage, e bay are not keen on this practice as it costs them money
Also it could be a con.

You may end up paying 99p for something with postage of 25 and it is insured.

But gets lost in the post so they say, but when you claim then you are only entitled to the 99p what you have paid and not the postage costs.

Also e bayers that are selling things from abroad IE China put a high postage charge on for something that does not sell for much but is worth more to get around the import duty that you might have to pay if you see what I mean

Didn't think of that Knobby. What makes it worse is that the seller is in England!!
Its definitely done to avoid e-bay fees.
Report the seller - it is against eBay rules to have excessive postage.

Give us the item number and I'll do it myself - it really does annoy me.
ebay have changed the rules , it used to be that you could sell the item for a low fee and make some money back on the postage. have a read of these remarks
