This might seem like a really simple question but I have never dyed my hair before but am now fighting a losing battle with the little grey monsters that insist on sticking out of my head :( so I was wondering if it would be ok just to put a semi-permanent hair dye on my hair (the same shade as it is now) but I go on holiday(abroad and hopefully hot and sunny) in 2wks so would this be ok or would it dry my hair out? it is in really good nik at the mo, or would it be better to wait til I get back home????? any advice greatly recieved

maby go to a salon and get hi-lights...saves you colouring all of your hair?? i bleach mine..and only get highlights because my roots come in quickly so i alternate between a half head of foils....and a full head the next time...but its not as harsh as a full head of dye u might get or do at home if your worried about your condition. also i think when u dye ur hair blonde (not sure of other colours) u have to leave a week or two incase your hair goes green in the pool from the chlorine hehe!! but i dont think that includes other colours of hair!! haha!!!

i found dying my hair at home a nightmare coz i turned my natural roots orange!!!good luck xxx

thanx for mega quick answer Tinkerbell, think i'll wait then til i get home from my hols, my colour is chestnut brown so the grey hairs really do stand out liike a sore thumb, so if any of them get really bad while i'm away i'll just have to yank the little beggers out ;) thanx again x
No matter what color you choose for hair tone, the texture is the same and will need conditioning.

Grey hair is resistant to coloring and is best done in a salon - it needs Infa-red treatment.

it's really pants getting older, I've always loved my natural colour and have been lucky enough to have really strong, thick healthy hair even though it's quite long, yet when a bloke starts getting a bit salt and pepper-ish it's looked on as distinguished....it's not fair :(
Lots of men have their 'distinguished' locks colored too ;)
im sure it will look lovely!! but id defo stick to salons- thats just me personally though iv had a few disasters!! ha! enjoy the holiday xx
oooh ps though....if u decide to dye it b4 u go u could always but leave in conditioners for during the day? that would stop ur hair drying out!! xxx

thanx Tink x
hi coke,
ive had the same problem with those wirey stray grey aerial like blighters that keep popping up too! lol
a couple of weeks ago i decided id had enough of yanking them out and decided to buy a clairol semi permanent colour which lasts up to 24 washes, it was only 3.69 too! (from tesco)
i was very pleased with it, it took well and covered the sprouting grey excellently.
they offer a wide range of colours, and i think when i next have a go i might just choose a slightly lighter shade than this time, i have long dark honey blonde hair and it came out just a little bit darker than idve liked, but that soon righted itself after a few washes anyway, so no probs.
maybe give the clairol one a try?
i too was nervous about dying my hair for the first time, but was very pleased with it and it looks very natural.
good luck with what you decide, let us know! and have a great holiday! :o)

cheers for that looobylooo, did you find that your hair stopped in same condition or did it dry out at all? just a bit concerned if i put it on now the sun, sea and pool might really dry it out...but then again could do what tink said and put a leave in conditioner on it :) X
hi again coke,
yep its stayed in the same condition as it was, just without those greyuns showing, its more than fine, im chuffed!
and like you say it might be an idea to use a leave in conditioner on too to help protect it ...
hey, you could always get yourself a nice floral swimming hat couldnt you?! lol .... remember those when you were kids? ... maybe im alot older than you and you dont?! lol ... very fetching they were! .. but they were that damn tight it took you half hour trying to get it on! and then if you werent careful you lost your eyebrows up in it too and you ended up looking like a little chinese girl! lol .... but they it kept your hair dry thats for sure! oh yeah, and your eyebrows!! lol
:o)

Yeh i can remember them...pmsl... with big daisies on them...OMG...they were really tight, hey might not be a bad idea it pulls your face back that taught it beats a facelift..lol What with the good hair no grey and no wrinkles I might be the best babe on the beach, now just need a suggestion as to where to put the extra wobbly bits from the rest of my bod!!!!!...lol ;) X
hey yeah!! lol, they could be the new facelift of the future!! lol
i think to get round the wobbly bits around your middle ... well, i know all about them, telll me about it!! ....lol... so. listen here, just get yourself a nice brightly coloured rubber ring, maybe try and coordinate the colours with the hat, and if you permanently walk around with that cleverly positioned around the wobbly midriff, i think that would do the trick .... and lets face it coke, all eyes will be on your lovely tight daisy laden swim hat and your taught jaw line and wrinkle free face than looking to see whats going on round the middle! lol .... sorrrrted! lol :o)

ha ha ha ha, OMG could you imagine that look, it could be a start of a new fashion revival, I'd defo be noticed...lol...but not all for the right reasons, and if anyone reading this on here goes to the same place as me, they're gonna know who I am straight away...lol thanx for the suggestion looooby although very brilliant(pmsl) i think my husband and daughters(who are at that 'i'm embarassed by what my parents do anyway)..age would have me taken away to the looney bin....lol xxx
ps...i'll keep you informed of what happens, but you might see me on front of the' news of world' first though ;)
I use Clairol as well coke and it does cover grey hair very well and also conditions hair beautifully. My one extravagance since getting older is I have my eyelashes tinted at the salon so I can swim without getting black eyes.
i will look out for you making the headlines then coke! lol .... i think youd look a right treat in your matching daisy ensemble!! ... most lovely!
craft, ive thought about getting the ol lashes done, but never have.
do you sit in a salon chair while they do it, whats the procedure?
ive thought about trying a home kit as im not one really for going to hairdressers or having beauty treatments done ...
would be interested to hear what you have to say about it please if you get a min...
:o)
Question Author
loobs i have always had my eyelashes done every year for my jollies, it's defo better getting it done at a salon i think i only pay about 5quid which is well worth it, and like craft says...it saves you getting the panda eye look.....which would actually probably go lovely with my new rubber ring/daisy swimming cap look...lol
oh yeah coke, i think that look would def finish it off dont you lol ...... certainly head turning to say the least! lol .... gosh, what a lovely picture i have in my mind of you lol ....!
i might concider having it done then some time. soooooo, do you sit back in a chair or do you have to lie down on a bed and get it done? ... i get concerned about the silliest of things! lol ... :o)
Question Author
when i've had it done i've just laid on a bed, vaseline is put round your eyes a piece of cotton wool placed underneath the lower lashes and then the dye is put on like when you put mascara on while your eyes are shut then another piece of cooton is placed over your shut eyes and left on for a few minutes (take the time to chill out) then your eyes are wiped clean and wallah its done. nothing to it looooby, if you go to a half decent salon and tell them you've not had it before i'm sure they'll talk you through it, but they probably will have to do a patch test first just to make sure you don't have a reaction. x
thanks coke, i might look into it then! ta :o)
