I am going to America in the summer, if I bought a hand held games console ie gameboy advance sp, would I encounter any problems apart from a different charger. It is about half the cost of buying one here.

No, only the different voltage charger will be a barrier as far as handheld consoles like the GBA, GBA SP, Nintendo DS or Sony PSP. All of these handheld consoles are region-free for their games, so you'll be able to bring it back over here and play games you bought from the US or games that you buy here in the UK or elsewhere.

It's a totally different story if you're talking about home consoles, which are all region restricted, but you'll be fine with the handhelds.
for consoles, you have to think about it being outputted as NTSC instead of PAL etc., but its still possible to get normal pictures with the right things. If its a big saving, go for it!
