My friend currently is claiming job seekers and is in receipt of housing benefit (they are paying the interest on her mortgage) and council tax benefit. She has one 16 year old child.

Anyway.....she has now found a part time job and would like to know if she'll still be entitled to the housing benefit. I know she can get WTC and CTC but if they discontinue with the HB then she'll be better off not working....?

Does anyone know?

Housing Benefit pays towards rent and Council Tax benefit pays towards Council Tax. if your friend is receiving JSA (Income Based) then the DWP is probably paying toward her mortgage interest. JSA will take into account her hours and earnings (with a small disregard) so it will all hang on how much she earns and how many hours she works. she needs to declare her work at the Jobcentre and to the HB people.

Thanks Sara. I will pass on that link.
I'm sorry, but "she'll be better off not working" ... thats one of the reasons the economy is in the way it is today. If she has found job and is able to work then she should! Obviously i dont know the in and outs of this and her situation but there are so many people out there right now who desperately WANT to work but cant or have no job to go to, they would jump at the chance of taking this job regardless of whether they were "better off" or not. Just the satisfaction of giving something back to society and for their own piece of mind knowing that they have earnt their money rather than sponging off tax payers! The allowance is set at a certain rate and people that usually earn a generous salary are actually worse off, but this shouldnt be an incentive to lower earners to become better off out of the system! I genuinely do apologise if this comes across wrong, i dont mean to have a go and understand that you're simply asking what she's entitled to, i just feel very strongly about this subject!
