I bought a new shiny HP laptop last week which cost almost 500. The cursor sometimes freezes and I can do nothing other than switch off (while stuff is running) and wait for things to improve. My machine is ex-display.
Why is this happening???

if it's ex display and as HP supply CD's to reinstall everything and take it back to factory settings that is the first thing I would have done.

You have no idea what may have been installed on that computer, a total wipe and reinstall is the safest option and will fix your problem.
i used to have this problem on my laptop and whenever it happened i would have to restart the computer.

i reinstalled the drivers for the trackpad and never had the problem again, you should be able to get them through the manufacturers website
