My 19 month lab has in the past week become less affection in fact shows no affection to me and at my faintest touch she grumbles at me. She is due to come into season and I am wondering if this could be her problem. I have not chastised nor withdrawn my hand. I am not frightened that she going to bite me but I am perplexed , she is my fourth lab bitch and never had anything like this happen before.

It could be a)just that she is due to come in season, b) she may have a phantom pregnancy, I have known a few dogs who have had these and one did get grumpy or c) she could be in pain and just wants to be left alone - not suggesting this is the case but I maybe she has an ear infection or something similar and when you give her affection this causes pain. For example, I usually pull my dogs ears which she loves but if she had an infection it would obviously be painful for her. Maybe an idea to get her checked out at the vets. Good luck and keep us posted as to progress.

She is fine with visitors and my husband and am leaning towards the season We were wondering wether to have her spayed this has made us decide to have it done.
always recommend spaying - there are enough puppies in the world looking for good homes (have worked in animal welfare for a million years) and she won't be at risk of getting a pyo metra later on in life. lets hope she's soon back to being a happy lab soon.

Shes happy its me that's not happy. Even though she is well bred from Drakeshead line of field champions we would not breed with her as I am getting to old to cope with birthing of any description. At the moment she is pestering husband for their hour long walk in the woods.
just seems its a bit funny coming on only in the last week - perhaps she's becoming obsessed with your husband if he does all the fun things like walking in the woods. I'm looking after a Lab (& a Whippet) at the moment due to owners broken leg and the Lab is fixated on me because I deliver the goods. Makes me feel like a million dollars especially as my much loved Collie (17, blind and selectively deaf) is unable to manage long walks now. Lab makes me feel as though I'm the most important person in the whole world and if I'd just stop messing about with the horses we could go even further on our walks!
maybe a crazy idea, but are YOU ok? maybe she is sensing some change in your mood / health / temper / disposition?
when mine is coming into season she becomes a grumbling bitch. i think its called pms nowerdays. i just make her a cup of tea and let her put her feet up and watch coronation street in peace

Thanks all for your answers I have decided it is to do with her season just been shopping and received my usual joyful welcome from her when I came home. I am just not her chosen mate . We are going to have her spayed once this season is over. I feel quite upset that she doesn't want petting as normal cos she is the most affectionate lab we have had.
