Fences - who should pay?

i live in a semi detached house. We own the house but our neighbours are council tenants. We are going to be putting up a fence in the front garden (in the middle, the one to separate the two gardens) soon, but i've though perhaps the council should have to pay something too??

I am going to try and get the council deeds to confirm whose responsibility it is but thought with them both being council houses at some stage, is the responsibility that of the council's??

is there a fence there already? some new estates dont allow fences on front gardens. If there is and its jointly owned the council MAY pay towards repai or replace if it needs it.

by the way, if you want a fence you pay for it. the council dont have to pay halves even if its their boundary, you just have to put it within the boundary if you want one.

Basic answer is that if you want the fence you pay for it and become responsible for it.

The Council really doesn't come into it

thanks for your answers. there isn't a fence there now. I've emailed the council on the off chance they may be able to help.

always worth asking but dont be disappointed if they say no.

It will say in your deeds which fences you are responsible for. Even if it is you or the council you may not be allowed to put one up due to the 'open plan' nature of the estate .

However regardless of who owns it or is responsible for it unless it states so in your deeds you don't have to put one up at all. So if it is the coumcil they may just say they aren't going to put one up.

You would then have the option of erecting one wholly on your property or going without.
