Is there anyway the public can check if someone decides to call themselves Lady or Sir for real?

I think you may call yourself anything you like, either as a custom or by changing your name by deed. A local shopkeeper round here changed his name to Lord Odin. However, I don't think you can insist other people address you as 'Milord'.

my Mum used to sign letters from school Elizabeth Winsdor, she had a wicked sense of humour and not one teacher ever noticed.
You can call yourself anything you like, and Debrettes is the book that shows peoples titles and ranks.

I deliver post to lady clare - she lives in a council house and isn't much of a lady.

I reckon it's OK providing there is no devious or criminal intent to it.
My friend's dog is called Lady
My understanding of Scots law is that anyone can adopt any name they wish unless it is done as part of some criminal activity. I have no kinowledge of English law

No knowledge -. if I was going to adopt a name it would have to be Dame and nothing less. I know someone calls himself Sir and he is a Wayne!
Would that be Wayne Kerr by any chance? lol
He's a very distinguished Wayne, Sue. My researches tell me he must be Sir Peregrine Wayne, Bt., one of the Suffolk Waynes.
ye it is ilegal. you need to be given these titles by rotyalty.

Mrs Overall - You know him!!
lol, I know several!
Dear Suetheramble,
My husband and I have been approached by his friend Sir Peregrine Wayne, who says he does indeed know you and agrees that you deserve a Damehood. I happen to have one left over from an Order which is in my personal gift, and Philip has persuaded me to confer this accolade upon you. This I hereby do.

I have already asked St Nicholas to drop the insignia of your Order down your chimney with further instructions,

We are, etc.
