I am fairly OK at setting up PC's for people.
I am trying to set up a Dell XPS Desktop for someone.
Aquiring the internet, removing all the rubbish it Ships with and installing AVG8 , About 5 user programs all loading OK using the CD/DVD Drive.
It shipped as Vista to SP1.
All is OK until it starts picking up about 32 updates.
At this point the CD/DVD drive icon goes missing in My Computer.
Putting in any disk there is no activity or normal whirring up.
I have checked all connections to motherboard and the drive.
If I restore it back to the "as shipped condition" the drive icon appears ?
Any ideas or has anyone had this problem before ?
I was wondering if an update was causing it of course or is it a known Vista thing ?

Sounds a bit bizarre. Have you uninstalled/installed any programs related to CD/DVD activity? A software player/burner for example? This may have screwed with a registry setting. If not, see if this helps:-

Thanks. Regarding the software , yes a DVD video editor.
I will reinstall and check after every one.
The suggestion looks good too

Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Upper Filters, Lower filters.

I could kick myself for not trying to boot up from a bootable CD (check BIOS) as someone at work suggested to verify the CD/DVD drive non activity.

Thanks Sputnik
