Last one! 1A "Society girl, a current collector (5) S*A*E.
I can only think of SKATE (S+KATE) but where does the "current collector" come in unless it refers to the fish?

Skate - as in fish
The "Skate" is another word for the collection "shoe" that trains south of London use to pick up electricity from the third rail. Bit obscure, though
Interesting I never considered that as a possible explanation. But yes.... Skate "a current collector on an electric railway train that collects its current from a third rail"
Definitely the right def, Phil, but weirdly not supported by Chambers.

Thanks all. The only fishy thing about railways that I remember is the fishplate connecting rails before they had continuous welding!
