Hi All Im looking for some advice please. I ran up quite a few debts to different companies when I was younger and I couldnt afford to pay so Im ashamed to say I moved and didnt inform them of my address. All the debts were unsecured and the last time I had contact with them was Jan 2003. I have never been able to afford to pay them off so have never got a credit report as they would be able to find my new address. The problem is I have no idea if any of them have ccjs against them. As i am approaching the 6 year mark were debts can become statute barred I need to know which ones this applies to. I have never recieved a court summons due to them not knowing my address. Yesterday I got a letter from Mackenzie Hall asking me to contact them. This was as my boyfriends house and I have nothing in my name there. What should I do? Do I ignore them or get him to say I dont live there. Im too scared to get a credit report or anything as you need to submit your current address and then they will all find me before the 6 years.I am really worried so any advice would be great thanks.

Mackenzie Hall have probably brought one of your debts from someone. They have done their homework and must know where you live so I wouldn't lie and say you don't live there. You can probably arrange a monthly repayment, your local CAB will be able to help you come to agreement on how much you have to owe. Don't ignore it or it may get worse.

Thanks for answering. The only problem is I dont live there and if I say I do will that not alert the the other debtors. My 6 years are up in Jan so dont want to start them again to be honest?

Also..i have heard some horrible stuff about Mackenzie hall on this forum and most people say not to contact them>
I wonder how they knew to send the letter there if thats not your address? Its up to you what you do but I have dealt with Mackenzie Hall myself and found them to be threatening and not conducting their company in the correct manner, just be aware that I don't think they will give up just like that

The only thing I can think of is that a few months ago I asked my work to send something to do with Shares to that address. I wonder if they have got it from that?
I am concerned that if he calls or emails to say I dont live there like it says on the letter, will they then say he shouldnt of opened the letter addressed to me and take action against him for DPA? I have recieved 3 letters now in 5 days!!
They are very persistant, they could have got your address from anywhere. Are you on the electoral role or have you applied for anything on the internet??

Does it say how much it is and where the debt is from? I've heard of them taking money off people without providing proof of the debt, when I asked for proof they would not send me anything so make sure you ask for all appropriate paperwork if you hold your hands up to it.

It doesnt actually say what its for or the amount. It just says they are looking for me and have heard I could be at that address. Cos I left a few debts im not sure which one it could be?!
I would ignore the letters and not respond, thats way your not saying either way whether you are connected to someone at that residence or not.

Or you could sent them back saying 'no longer at this address.'

I would do the first option first though, because the longer you delay them 'possibly' finding you the better if you say 'no longer at this address' they might search other avenues or they will 'smell a rat' and poke further to find out from your bf where u are.

I have never heard of this firm are u sure it about debts and not the shares info or something similar??

Thanks for your answer. I will ignore them until I get another letter and then send them back to the sender. They are defo a debt collectors as I have googled them and there is loads of forums on here with people who have had bad experiences with them!
They are definitely debt collectors - they are part of Capquest if you have heard of them. Not very nice people at all.

Don't forget that debtors are legally obliged to notify the creditor of a change of address.

Failing to do so can prevent the Limitation Act 1980 being enforceable. It is a very complicated area of law.

Sorry to be brutal but you've only got yourself to blame. They are your debts - why shouldn't you pay them off? Why do you think you can just run away from your responsibilities?
If you were an honest law abiding citizen you would have paid them years ago.

People like you make me sick!
Well said, pay your debt, anyway im sure you didnt tell your creditors you moved address so Stat of limitations doesnt work anyway.
more time working to pay your debt and less time trying to work out how to screw the system (but not vey well).
this could result in your debt being paid and people having a bit of respect for you.
