DVD-(minus) is a format backed by the "DVD Forum" whilst DVD+(plus) is a format standard backed by the "DVD Alliance". Basically, depending on which format a company is allied with (sometimes both) their media will support one or the other. Minus is sometimes said to offer the best compatibility with home DVD playing systems (although this is highly subjective) whilst the +RW format offers the advantage of Mount Rainier support (drag and drop facility). The two formats +/- are both very similar though. A lot of DVD drives offer compatibility with both formats nowadays, why there are still two I don't know.
cause everyone wants to say i invented it. anyhow makes no odds nowadays so just plough along
