I used to work with an ex policeman. Lovely chap he was.
We got to talking one day about prison sentences. He believed that sentences should be in total, total isolation. He said for there to be no one to talk to, no radios, no TV, no books, no window, no nothing. He said the sentence wouldn't be anywhere near as long & the crims would never want to come back.
He also said the sentence should only be for a few months; not for it to send them mad or break them.
I've thought about this for a long time & I now agree with him.

It would be equivalent to torture, especially not having a window. Books and other forms of entertainment should be allowed but controlled.ie the prison tells them when they are allowed to watch TV /read books so that there is some sort of punishment.

I read about a prisoner in Gautanamo who was unable to speak as he was kept nude, exposed to cold and was deprived of sleep.
Smoking should be banned as well.
I have my own very definite ideas about this. If someone goes out to deliberately rape or murder, they don't deserve anything in the way of human rights, and serial murderers can't, in my humble opinion, be "rehabilitated". They're sick individuals, and if the death penalty can't or won't be implemented, then these people should be locked up forever. Better still - I agree with ladybird. Send these hideous people off to Siberia or somewhere, and make them work in chain gangs.
