Any program that tells you that you have loads of viruses and you need to buy their software IS A SCAM.

Thousands of people pay out 29.99 or whatever for a pirce of useless software when they probably have not got any viruses at all.

Run Norton anti virus, and if it tells you that you have no viruses you are probably OK.

It may be worth installing am anti malware product like Adaware (free) to see if it can find and remove this program that is telling you to buy their software.

I beieve Spybot Search and Destroy can also do this (is also free) but I rarely use it.

While you should install and run only one anti virus product it is fine to run more than one anti malware / spyware product.
Not sure if you are aware (sorry if you are aware) but make sure you have downloaded the latest virus database from Norton and also make sure you have actually RUN Norton anti virus.

Some virus products dont run unless you kick them off manually (depends on the settings).
Also make sure you have downloaded all the latest Windows fixes (via windows update).

These types of naughty programs often come in to your computer via "holes" in Windows or IE.

Microsoft may have fixed the bug, but if you have not downloaded the fix then someone may have written a program to exploit this "hole".

Always keep your Windows (and Office if you have it) fixes up to date.

thankyou
i appreciate your help on this.
i assume you are talking about the virus 'anti-virus 2009'. i had this also and it is a swine to get rid of but i removed it with a small, free download. if you post your email address i will send you the program.

AV2009 in itself isnt too bad just very annoying but it opens the backdoor to let all sorts of other pop-ups in.

thanks everyone. i appreciate your help on this. i think i have managed to get rid of this. if it comes back i will let you know.
It's a trojan and a real bitch to get rid of. Spybot failed to clean it when I came across it a year or so ago but a friend of mine had success getting shot of it using the free version of Super Anti Spyware. Good luck.

i used super anti spyware and it found a few things which i removed. it seemed to clear it for me.
make sure you do a full scan. a quick scan removed 95% of the malware that had piggybacked into my pc but only a full scan got rid of everything.
