If you're in the construction industry then you may be a member of the ICE or CIOB.  Annual subscriptions to professional organisations like this are tax deductable.  I asked the ICE for receipts for my last five years of subscriptions, sent them to the tax office and got a cheque back for the tax within a month.  Also, anything else you have to pay for yourself in order to carry out your job (site boots, textbooks, etc.) is also eligible.  If you're self employed you're laughing. The inland revenue (www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk) website is pretty good for info on this sort of thing, all the leaflets and advice notes are available for download as .pdf files.
