mint

mint condition
mint can mean shakedown
No, it is sift as given below.
After all the sifts and silts, I'm still inclined towards MINT.

As in 'he made a mint from the ransom'.

I went for SIFT
The answer is silt - I am a member of the new 'Telegraph Clued-up' and one is allowed up to five letter hints for each crossword - using four of those, the answer is confirmed as sift. (Though I do not like the clue either!).
Sorry typo - that should be SIFT as ladyalex says.
I too changed from "mint" to "sift".
This was discussed several pages down.

My vote is still for SILT.

Silt is the finest discrete particle obtained in shakedown:

BOULDER, ROCK,STONE,...............,SAND,.......SILT.

Particles smaller than silt homogenise into clays.
Johndeeby - if you read this, please tell why you refuse to accept what I said above about the answer being confirmed by the Telegraph itself as SIFT - thanks.
