its all to do with where your car is from, french cars like peugoet renault and ciroen are on the left due to the french driving on the left
No, the fuel guage can be at either side it's the picture of the hose coming from the main pump that's correct.....does that make sense?

so if the needle points to the left then tank is on left?
its so much easier to have a look
Right, have a look at this pic

See how the hose is to the right of the pic? Well imagine that was a real petrol pump you driving toward, then it would mean that your car would be situated beside it to reach the petrol cap on the passenger side of the car. If you flip the picture in your mind so the hose is at the other side, then the cap would be on the drivers side.

It doesn't matter where on your dash the pic is, it's what side the hose is at that matters.
No, not true... I heard something similar on Top Gear not so long ago. If the handle on the pump symbol in the guage is on the right hand side then the filler will be on the right hand side... Not so in either case I'm afraid.. I have a Honda Civic and happened to remember what i heard on TG when I pulled into fuel up and mentioned it to a friend that was in the car with me only to be WRONG !!! The fuel guage is on the right hand side of the Clocks and the handle on the pump symbol is on the right but the fuel filler is on the left handside (nearside) of the car...
Well, after I heard about it, I checked the guage of every person I knew that had a car (and I was in a position to check, I didn't make special visits LOL), and every one of them has been correct for me so far.
The only one I know for certain is on any Ford vehicle. On the fuel gauge at the bottom is a little arrow pointing left or right to indicate which side the filler cap is.
Indicators to show where the filler cap is !!!, crikey, they'll be putting arrows in the car next to show where the doors are.
My car's the opposite Lakitu - I'd read that on a website and checked. (mazda btw)
sddsdean is correct for every car I have been in over the last 2 or 3 years - and that is a lot of cars. Strangely very few fords.
And sigma, on every car 1) you can see where the doors are without getting out to look, 2) it doesn't involve awkward manouevring if you get the door location wrong and 3) they generally don't vary much.
For someone like me who regularly drives different cars, and usually has to put fuel in them, the little arrow is a godsend. I am constantly amazed that so few people are aware of this.
