My partners car an N reg 214 rover has an occassional fault which is that (regardless of whether the steeringlock is on or not) it is impossible to turn the key in the ignition. Much jiggling and a bit of luck usually fixes it. Two questions - a part from replacing the barrel is there anything that can be done... and in a similar vein would greasing the key help or worsen the problem.

TIA

Several things might be the cause, dirt in the lock, worn or damaged tumblers, weak springs or a worn key.

Cleaning the lock with a residue free solvent might help. Only ever use WD40 or GT90 lubricants, never grease or 3in1. Best of all though is powdered Teflon or graphite. It may be possible for an Auto Locksmith do cut you a new key by code to compensate for wear.

I had exactly the same problem on an N reg 218 TD, and even with a newer spare key, the problem still happened. I ended up with a new barrel and distinct loathing of Rovers as it cost a mint and was hardly worth it. I'd only really bother if the car is in mint condition and maybe worth selling.
