I am wanting to erect a garden fence and am not sure whether to use metposts or ordinary posts. If i used ordinary posts what would be the correct size for a 5 foot high fence?

Presume by ordinary you mean wooden?  You should drop the post into concrete at least a foot below ground, and if you have a gravel board this adds 6 inches, so I would go for a 7ft post and trim the tops to suit,
