What is sushi? Is it vinegared rice, or is it raw fish? The term seems to be used by people referring to raw fish more often than not......

It is a Japanese delicacy of rice wrapped in seaweed. It can have many different fillings, one of which can be raw fish. It could also have a vegetarian filling. General ignorance has made people believe that it is a term for raw fish, which it is not.
Sushi needs to have rice vinegar, salt and sugar added to be called Sushi, raw fish is called Sashimi (well Sashimi actually means thin slice). So in technical terms Sushi can be made with raw fish, vegtables of meat all of which would be Sushi. Its just that traditionally it uses raw fish.
Do people eat it for its taste, for a change, when they lose a bet...? It sounds revolting, with or without the vinegar!
Birchy & squirrel; people all over eat smoked salmon. Just because the fish is not mushed up doesnt make it terrible. Sushi tray selections can be bought from all the top shops including M & S, Tesco, & Sainsbury. Eat it before you turn you nose up at it. Eat within an hour of purchase, washed down with alcohol (Saki?) or other drink.
raw fish wrapped in seaweed
It must be one of those things that tastes like what it isn't, e.g. carrot cake does not take like carrot, as such

Not sure where I've implied that sushi was unfit for human consumption - maybe football has read between the touchlines? - all I wanted to know was what it actually is. But I've been reliably informed that it is not fish and that it IS fish. Thanks !!!??? Perhaps I'll try it if I ever find out what it is.......
5029 is correct. Sushi may have raw fish in it (ie smoked salmon) but it is more about the presentation of food rather than its ingredients.
sushi is the japanese way of getting even for Hiroshima and nagasaki
