Thanks so much for that! Got an abscess and cannot think straight and it has been giving me a headache. But, to be honest, maths is not my strongest point! I used to get hit on the back of my hands with big ruler if I got a question wrong, and I think it has scarred me for life! That is my excuse and I am sticking to it. Seriously though, it has driven me round the bend for 3 days and although I think I got close to the answer the more I looked at it the further away I got from it.. Now I can get on with my sad life again!
To work it out, set Peter's age as x.
John is x+1/2x = 3x/2.
James is 3x/2+3x/4 = 9x/4.

x + 3x/2 + 9x/4 = 4x/4 + 6x/4 + 9x/4 = 19x/4 = 152

19x = 152 * 4 = 608

x = 608/19 = 32

3x/2 = 96/2 = 48 = John's age

Thanks Big Dave. Did you ever see the film 'Scanners'? Well, that is what nearly happened to me when I tried to work through your solution. I think I will be totally sexist in this instance and say that you men are better at this type of problem than 'most' of us women. Viva La Difference!!
