coal mine on bbc series coast.

I watched part of the BBC series "Coast" recently and part of it refered to a very early coal mine built out under the sea. It had a brick shaft built off the sea bed and ships would pull up along side it and load coal that had been winched up from below the sea bed.Can anyone give me details of this mining operation so that I can investigate it further. thanks
