Yes you can. Ask the company that received your reference from your ex employer and they will provide a copy.

My new employer couldn't show me the reference until my old employer had agreed. Seemingly they can say no to the request, which seemed odd to me!

In your case, write to your old HR department asking for a copy of the reference provided
