I don't know what causes it but I do know that if you drink a glass of tonic water every evening ( gin/vodka optional! ) , the quinine in the tonic has a preventative effect

Thanks both ... Am heading for a large G & T right now xx
Try taking a calcium tablet every day!!!

Thanks Puddicat ... will try that too ..... but I think I prefer the G&T option!!! ;-)
Maybe poor circulation, is causing your feet to feel cold, so cramps occur. I have a similar problem and find wearing warm socks in the evening or at night helps relieve the problem.
The alcohol in your tonic water will only make the cramps worse, you need to have the tonic water on its own or with some juice or cordial in it.
yip tonic water does help. Also I tend to get cramp when I am a bit lacking in salt. obviously dont overdo it but monitor if you could perhaps be lacking. My grampa used to swear by a sock with corks in it stopping cramps. Dont know how it worked but he just kept it in his bed - approximately 6-8 corks (from wine bottles and not the plastic ones) put inside an old sock and a knot tied in it. No idea how it worked but if he said it did then I believe him!!! There you go - looks like you will now need to have a few bottles of wine along with that gin and tonic (oh and a packet of salty peanuts!)
Crampex tablets - buy them over the counter at the chemist.
