Needs pruning as it has become to wide and over shadowing shrubs planted either side, is it to late to prune it now.

I should wait until Spring before pruning as it would produce new growth now and frosts would damage it.
Magnolias are best pruned after flowering in early summer. If you prune now you will remove any potential flowering buds for next year.

Do not prune in Spring as this is when they are flowering and looking their best.
