please can anyone help

my husband is contracted to work mon to fri 39 hours per week after which he has the option of working overtime. he was sent a text from his supervisor to tell him he had to attend a safety meeting on a saturday for a four hour session, he would be paid for four hours but not for travel time or expenses, it would have been a five hour round trip without the session in total nine hours overall on a day he is not contracted to work unless he accepts overtime, he refused to go and has now been told he must attend a disciplinary hearing of which the outcome could be a formal disciplinary warning or dismissal he has worked for the company for nearly 3 years and never had any problem before can they do this to him.

I would imagine hes in the wrong.
Ive worked in jobs where you had to come in monthly for staff meetings and you were only paid the meeting time hours.If its a safety meeting then technically without the correct training they could say he wasn't adequately trained for the job.

The bottom line is in today's job market , if you've been happy for 3 years then to risk your job because of this would seem foolish.
If the company allowed everyone to miss the safety meeting then there d be no one that knew the safety rules/ training.
And if no one else was paid extra why should your husband be ?
Basically if i was him id go to the meeting state his case , calmly and quietly , and hope when hes disciplined , which he will need to be , that he only gets a verbal warning.

Training or staff meetings aren't normally classed as overtime in my experience.

Hang on this seems strange.. I mean a 5 hour round trip to attend a meeting is one heck of a trip not reasonable to expect some one to do that at their own expense....

Seeeing as your job may be at risk with the possible takeover between hbos and tsb id say smooth it over so at least one of you definitely has a job.

Its hardly the right time in the job market for a major hassle.

its ok for you to say that but unfortunately his hearing is tomorrow too late to be smoothing things over i think he just needs to know his rights thats all
