Smoking Whilst Pregnant

I'm just over four months pregnant and trying to stop. It's so hard and i'm still smoking around 8 a day. I used to smoke 20 a day. I have cut down a lot.

I know its selfish, but can't seem to stop.

Any hints and what are the proven real dangers of smoking whilst pregnant

Ahhhh, something puddicat has said there reminds me.... you will need to clean your house, your curtains, your clothes, bedding etc etc... sorry but if they smell of cigarette smoke then you will be constantly reminded of it when you come inside.

1. Get rid of all tobacco and papers etc
2. Remove ashtrays (give them away or send to a charity shop)
3. Wash clothes, bedding, curtains, soft furnishings
4. Vacuum carpets etc
5. Wash down woodwork etc etc

A lot of work I know, but it will really help when the smell of tobacco is removed from your living space.
6. Open the windows and get fresh air inside
I just thought os another tip! I really should practice what I preach...lol

Wear a rubber band on your wrist, and everytime you get a craving, pull on it and release. The craving will soon be associated in your brain with pain/discomfort and it'll make it easier to stop.
i know its hard to give up, i smoked a little when pregnant with my son five years ago. i stopped for first 3 months when i was sick all the time, then started again for a few months, i dont know why, it was so silly but i thought it made me feel better! i stopped again for last few months because i was feeling sick again! i have not smoked since and would never have smoked around my son. i then knew that i felt much better not smoking. i never thought i would hate smoking but now i do, cant stand being near it and can smell smokers miles away, i am pregnant though, and it makes me feel sick. the worst thing is i can smell a child who's parents smoke without even knowing if they do. if you cant do it yourself then there are nhs stop smoking groups but i think if youve cut to 8 a day you could do it, if your partner smokes it will be easier for you and better for baby if you both stop. good luck
Sorry, I disagree with all this.

Giving up is a piece of cake.

It is not hard at all. It is all about will power and a bit of self respect. If it was really that hard, nobody would ever succeed would they?

Just quit. Forget all the advice and tips people are giving you and simply never smoke again.

It will give you cancer and you will die. If that doesn't work, what good are little pastils, drinking some water, cleaning your curtains etc.

YOU WILL GET CANCER AND DIE AND YOUR UNBORN CHILD WILL BE SMALL AND WEEDY AND DIE EARLY AS WELL.

FFS, just stop.


(P.S, I had a puff on a cigarette when I was around 14 or 15, so I know all about addiction!!!!)
hi i know we are all looked at scornfully for smoking when pregnant and we shouldnt but only peoplw who do smoke know the addiction that it is and that it is very difficult to give up smoking even tho we are pregnant, i unfortunately smoked when i was pregnant with both my children, i didnt smoke alot but i did smoke and to be honest i know alot of babies are born prem and small etc due to it but my daughter was born 8 days late weighing 8lb 2ozs(big for a girl and first baby) and my son was also 8days overdue and weighed whopping 10lb 10ozs at birth, both my children are very healthy and although i still smoke my children are not near it as i dont have it in my house etc. it would be great for you if you could stop but dont blame yourself if you cant. its hard especially when your hormones are all over the place.

Babies of pregnant women who continue smoking are more likely to:

* Have developmental problems
* Have a lower birth weight
* Have problems keeping warm when newborn
* Have a higher risk of cot death
* Have a higher risk of illnesses such as asthma

Try to stop smoking before you get pregnant

If you quit before you get pregnant not only will you get your baby off to a better start in life but you'll also have been a non-smoker for longer � making it easier to resist smoking during your pregnancy and afterwards.
Help to stop smoking for mums-to-be

The great news is - since the dangers of smoking have become more well-known, help with giving up smoking is much more widely available. Your midwife should be able to give you lots of advice and encouragement and put you in touch with local support groups. Many people find it easier to quit if they have someone helping them along.
You are addicted and you need your fix. If you do not get it you are anxious and irritable.

They thing is, your baby will have been getting the nicotine in your blood supply, and will be just as addicted as you are.
But little baby cannot light one up when it pops out of the womb. It will be forced to give up. This will obviously make it unhappy, and is likely to cry a lot and not settle.
