Get in your car, drive somewhere you've never been, get a B&B and chill and spend some time together.  Or is that too imaginative?

Stunningly imaginative suggestion, that.
If you want cheap, try a youth hostel, much cheaper and you cna some really remote ones that are really quite impressive.
For something more enjoyable try the Lovelady Shield Hotel in Alston Cumbria. It's discreet and the food's great. Not cheap mind you and, no, I'm not on the payroll. I enjoyed a stay there with my wife.
I have a spare room.

It might be too late now but..

www.laterooms.com is quite a good site, you can get some good discounts on there.

Also the "motel" type chains can be quite good, Travelodge/Innkeeper's Lodge etc, they often have special offers on for new openings etc.

Depends how you like to chill, but I can recommend a few places for relaxing weekends...Bath, Tenby, Shrewsbury...and I may be biased cos it's my neck of the woods, but Chester's lovely - good shops, lots of restaurants, interesting architecture, river...etc etc...

Hope this helps!
