How long, by law, does a utility company have to charge you for their services? I have twice contacted my water company to say that I have never had a bill from them despite living in my house for 22 months. The 1st time I was told they would get back to me (they never did) and the 2nd time I contacted them (I was worried about ending up with a huge bill if I kept leaving it) I was told that my house has never had a meter fitted since being built 2years ago and that I should contact the meter company to arrange this.Surely this is the water companies responsibility as its the only way they can get my money?? This was all approx 6 months ago and Ive heard nothing since. I have been told though that they only have 1 or 2 years to charge you or they have to write it off. Is this true?

Max seems to now be one year, someone had a 2 year electricity bill here. If as you say there is no meter fitted that is def. the water company's problem not yours.

From the billing code

"From the 1st July 2006 where the supplier has been at fault in not billing a domestic customer the supplier will not send a bill which includes energy consumed more than 2 years previous to the bill being issued. From 1st July 2007 this period will reduce to 1 year" (Clause 3.5)

BTW which water company supplies you, as each one has a different way of dealing with this situation.

Hi thanks. Its Severn Trent
Well in their code of practice if they fail to respond to you in 10 days regarding your account they owe you 20.

This is the page and read the pdf, in the blue highlighted table it says the 'penalties' for thier failures.

It also has email contact us page, preferable to phone calls as there is a written record of your complaint. If you email them and there is no response after 10 days try again, this time send a copy to the consumer council for water (they make this info public in the feedback and complaints bit on the web) I bet you will seee some action after this.
