I wonder if you are confusing *taste* with *smell* here.... as far as I know there are only five basic tastes - salty, sour, sweet, bitter and umami. The sense of smell however, can vary dramatically between people - from virtually no sense to a highly acute smell (not as good as a dog though!) - so maybe you are finding their smell to be similar ?
